One Card, Two Sides of Town: How Conroe's Rec Membership Works Now That Oscar Johnson Jr. Is Open

The outdoor water season around Lake Conroe ends with the month. The floating Lake Conroe Splash Zone at Lake Conroe Beach Park takes session bookings through Oct. 31, 2026. After that, the City of Conroe has an easier way to keep moving through the cooler months than it did a year ago. One membership now covers three buildings: C.K. Ray Recreation Center, Conroe Aquatic Center and the new Oscar Johnson Jr. Enrichment & Recreation Center on Foster Drive.

Whether the card is worth it for your household comes down to how often you go and where you live. A day pass costs $10 at any of the three facilities, and a resident month costs $30, so the month pays for itself on the third visit. The rate you pay for that month depends on which side of the Conroe city limit your home sits, and has nothing to do with the building you use.

The membership now reaches the east side

Oscar Johnson Jr. opened to the public on Jan. 20, 2026. Community Impact reported that the two-story building covers 86,974 square feet on 22 acres at 710 Foster Drive and replaces the older center of the same name. Funding of $35 million was approved in December 2021, and ground was broken on July 13, 2023.

According to Mike Cantu, the city's assistant director of recreation operations, the building has two full-size basketball courts that convert into six pickleball courts, weekly group fitness classes and a cycling room. It also has a fitness area with free weights, machines and cardio equipment, a women-only workout space, a kids zone and expanded senior programming. The city's membership page also lists an indoor walking track and a game room. When it rains or the wind turns cold, that track is the kind of thing that keeps a daily walk going.

The city's 2018 planning work for the site pictured a 25-acre campus with trails, workout stations and picnic shelters. For this winter, think of Oscar Johnson as an indoor facility.

For a membership holder, the key fact is that the same pass works here and on Candy Cane Lane. The city says memberships include the fitness center, gym, racquetball courts, game room, lap swim, recreational swim and exercise classes "at all centers." Members must be 15 or older, or 12 to 14 with a parent or guardian. You can lift at Foster Drive on Tuesday and swim laps on Candy Cane Lane on Thursday without paying twice.

Candy Cane Lane still owns the early hours

The other two buildings in the membership sit next to each other. C.K. Ray Recreation Center is at 1203 Candy Cane Lane, and Conroe Aquatic Center is at 1205. Between them, they cover the before-work hours:

  • C.K. Ray: Monday through Thursday 5 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday 5 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., closed Sunday.
  • Conroe Aquatic Center: Monday through Friday 5 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., closed Sunday. Its two pools are heated, covered and open year-round.

Neither building opens on Sunday. Keep that in mind if weekends are your only free time.

Pickleball players have a posted schedule at C.K. Ray. The weekly recreation table lists pickleball Monday through Friday from 7 to 10:30 a.m., Saturday from 7 to 10 a.m., and Monday and Thursday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m. The city marks that table "subject to change," and those times apply to C.K. Ray only. For Oscar Johnson Jr., check the center's page on the city website or call ahead before heading to the six-court gym on Foster Drive. The city's fitness programs page links a separate Oscar Johnson fitness class schedule, and classes come with a membership or a $10 daily pass. The older city listing that shows weekday hours of 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. belongs to the previous center at 100 Park Place. It does not apply to the new building.

The three-visit math

Because the network now has more than one gym and two heated pools, the case for a membership over day passes is stronger. These are the rates currently listed on the city's Memberships and Passes page:

Membership Resident Non-resident
Individual, 1 month $30 $40
Individual, 4 months $90 $120
Individual, 12 months $245 $325
Household of up to 4, 1 month $60 $80
Household of up to 4, 12 months $545 $725
Senior 60+, 1 month $21 $28
Senior 60+, 12 months $214 $285
Daily admission, ages 3 and up $10 $10
KidZone childwatch, 20-visit card $23 $30

A few comparisons explain the table.

The four-month resident package works out to $22.50 a month, against $30 when you pay month to month. That covers Thanksgiving through the end of winter. Twelve resident months at the monthly rate would cost $360, while the annual package costs $245.

The day pass is the only price that is the same for everyone, at $10. If you visit now and then, where you live doesn't matter. Once you become a member, it does. A non-resident individual pays $80 a year more than a resident, and a non-resident household pays $180 more for the annual package.

For parents, KidZone childwatch takes children ages 6 months to 9 years, and the city marks it as requiring a membership. A single two-hour day pass costs $8 for residents or $10 for non-residents. The city also offers military, government and student memberships, with proof of status required at purchase. The page doesn't give an effective date for any of these rates, so check the current figures when you sign up.

The line that sets your rate

The resident column depends on where you live. The city says you must "reside within the city limits of Conroe," and it accepts three kinds of proof:

  1. A Texas driver's license
  2. An official Texas ID card
  3. A property tax statement

You must re-verify your residency every 12 months, and you show your pass at every visit. The city asks about city limits, not mailing addresses. It also runs an "Am I a resident" map where you can check your address before you pay. If you're deciding between a $545 and a $725 household year, that check is worth a minute.

Seniors have one more option to know about. The Conroe Senior Center at 1202 Candy Cane Lane is a separate facility with its own monthly activity pass of $7.50 for residents or $10 for non-residents. It's open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and lists bingo, chair volleyball, line dancing, mahjong, tai chi and more. That pass and the $21 senior fitness membership are two different purchases, even though the buildings share a street.

What Oscar Johnson's calendar holds through December

Even without a membership, the Foster Drive center has dated events this fall:

  • Friday Night Live, Nov. 6 and Dec. 4: For grades 3 through 8, from 7 to 11 p.m., with pizza and a drink included. It costs $15 for residents or $20 for non-residents.
  • Conroe Youth Basketball League evaluations, Saturday, Nov. 14: Practices start the week of Dec. 7, and Saturday games run from Jan. 2 to Feb. 13.
  • Holiday camps: The city lists one-day, two-day and extended school-break options on select weekdays, 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., in a catalog that runs from Oct. 12, 2026, to April 26, 2027.
  • Fall classes: Youth coding, plus adult citizenship, English and Spanish classes, with sessions and fees listed in the city's activity catalog.

Plan around the holiday closures. Oscar Johnson Jr. closes Nov. 26 and 27 for Thanksgiving and Dec. 23 through 25 for Christmas. C.K. Ray closes the same Thanksgiving days, Nov. 26 and 27, but its Christmas closure runs Dec. 24 through 26. So on Dec. 23, C.K. Ray is the open option, and on Dec. 26, Oscar Johnson is.

Whether you pay the resident rate or the non-resident rate depends on which side of the Conroe city limit your address falls.
